Jodie, a year and a half old German shepherd, was recently welcomed to the New Rochelle Police Department after graduating from the K9 Basic Patrol School in Yonkers. Jodie and his handler, Officer Gary Moss will join the department’s Critical Incident Unit’s Team B following 17 weeks of training.

Police in New Rochelle have been utilizing police K9 Units since 1997. In the spring Jodie and his partner will continue training with a three-month-long Explosive Detection School where Jodie will develop skills to detect various types of explosives.

“(Canines) possess capabilities that humans cannot duplicate,” according to police. “An average dog’s nose is tens of thousands of times more sensitive to odors than a human nose.”

The Critical Incident Unit (CIU) is comprised of three teams. Jodie and Police Officer Moss will be joining K9 Diesel and Police Officer Jose Pena in CIU Team C, and K9 Valor and Police Officer Matthew Glass in CIU Team A. Jodie came to the department through the New Police Foundation as a donation from Gary Torigian and his Butterflies From Jodie Foundation.

“The Unit has been a tremendous asset to the Department significantly increasing its investigative capacity and ability to respond more effectively to a variety of emergencies,” Police Commissioner Joseph Schaller stated. “We are grateful to Mr. Torigian, his Butterflies From Jodie Foundation and the New Rochelle Police Foundation for their generous donation and continued support.”
